The City of Roanoke E-911 Center is located in a secure facility and has four platoons working 12 hour shifts. A normal shift consists of 6 to 8 dispatchers and 1 or 2 supervisors. Administrative staff includes a Manager, Systems Administrator, Training Coordinator, and Operations Specialist. The center operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The E-911 center answers and monitors calls or events from:
Any 911 wireline and wireless call placed in the city of Roanoke
Calls after business hours to the public works (540-853-2225) or child abuse (540-853-2245) hotlines
Radio communications between police, fire, rescue and hospital personnel
The center processes an average of 150,000 calls for police, 24,000 calls for fire and rescue while processing approximately 265,000 telephone calls a year.
