The Roanoke Police Department unveiled the fallen officer memorial sculpture, entitled “Officer Down" at a ceremony on May 14, 2004, during National Police Memorial Week. Lawrence Bechtel, of Blacksburg, was selected to create an outdoor sculpture memorializing a fallen police officer for the entrance of the Roanoke Police Department.
The design of the building has always included a space for a statue or memorial directly in front of the main doors. Even before construction began, a committee of police employees began to discuss options for a fitting memorial to fallen officers. The committee worked with representatives of the Roanoke Arts Commission to solicit proposals from artists throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region.
