Certificate of Occupancy

Certificate of Occupancy (CO) Application

This page is under construction.

We are working to simplify the certificate of occupancy process by tailoring requirements to the situation.

Tier A

  • A proposed new use matches both the building code use group and the zoning code use authorized by a previous CO.
  • The CO was issued under a previous building code
  • No construction or site work involved
  • Then ----> Apply for a new CO; have the space inspected for building maintenance code compliance only; no floor plan is required.

Tier B

  • A proposed new use fits within the building code use group but the zoning code use is different.
  • No construction or site work involved
  • Then ------> Apply for a new CO; have the space inspected for building maintenance code compliance only; no floor plan is required.

Tier C

  • No CO exists for the building.
  • No construction or site work is involved
  • Then ----> Apply for a CO; a floor plan is required.

Tier D

  • There is a CO, but the proposed new use was not authorized.
  • No construction or site work is involved.
  • Then ----> Apply for a CO; a floor plan is required.

Where construction is planned or required, a separate building permit will be required.
